LAを拠点にストリートからファッションシーンまで幅広く活動している新鋭フォトグラファー、久保百駒の連載『The other side of Angels』。現在22歳のユースとして、自分の視点でLAの人やカルチャーを切り取る。そのカタチを写真を通じて紹介していく。第1回目は、本連載を進行していく久保百駒からの挨拶、普段、どのような写真を撮影しているのかを掲示していく。

The other side of Angels.00: Prologue

こんにちは。久保百駒（くぼひゃく）と申します。

東京で生まれ育ち、19年間過ごした街を離れて夢と新しい経験を求め、単身でLAへ渡りました。東京で想像していたLAは、キラキラした憧れの象徴のような街で、実際に住み始めたときは、街のエネルギーや人、文化、言語の壁に圧倒されつつも、「ここで何かを成し遂げたい」という強い思いを抱いていました。

渡米して間もない頃、ある出会いが自分の世界を大きく変えました。同い年の彼は、自分の好きなことを武器に世界を飛び回っていて、その姿に触れるうち、自分の無知さやちっぽけさを痛感しました。その縁で“キラキラした世界”の入り口に立ちましたが、「自分は何者なのか」を問われた瞬間、うまく答えられず、英語も話せず、学生という肩書き以外に示せるものがない自分に嫌気がさしました。そこで“自分を証明する何かが必要だ”と気付き、カメラを手にしました。

光の当たる世界に触れてわかったのは、LAの輝きの奥に、表からは見えない無数のストーリーや温度が流れていること。
その“裏側”を新たなリアルとして切り取るため、この連載を “The Other Side of Angels” と名付けました。

カメラは自分を変え、言語の壁を越えて人とつながるための唯一の道具です。
この街で見てきたリアルを、写真と言葉で伝えていきたいと思っています。

Hello Eyescrem, my name is Hyaku Kubo.

I was born and raised in Tokyo. At 19, I decided it was time for me to leave what I knew and  the city I spent my whole life in to chase dreams and see that world outside. Los Angeles, I had imagined, looked to be a dream-like city of possibility, bright lights, a city of “kira kira.”

When I arrived in California, the energy of the city, the different kinds of people, their cultures, their look and their language were all so overwhelming, but there was a pull here in Los Angeles that made me feel, “I can do something here.” 
Once here, I got swept up in the “Kira Kira” world I had always imagined and met someone who shifted the world I knew. The same age as myself, he had traveled all over the world because of his passion, his work.  Sitting next to him, though I had just taken the biggest leap of my life so far in moving to LA, I realized how little I knew and how much larger it could all be. This connection opened the door to this world, but the moment someone asked me who I was, I had no real answer. My English was broken, and aside from being a student, I had nothing to show for myself or who I was. Then I picked up a camera. 

In the years I have now spent living in Los Angeles and all its “kira-kira,” that behind or underneath these bright beautiful lights, was everyone else. Their realities, their stories, and the emotions threaded between that aren’t visible at first glance. That’s why for this series, I titled it “The Other Side of the Angels,” to show my view of Los Angeles and capture what’s beneath the surface. 

The camera had changed me. It became the instrument that connected me with the people and their places, beyond just language.
With the photographs in this series for “The Other Side of the Angels,” I want to share the realness of Los Angeles I have seen.
