2021年1月1日（金）にVANS×THEY AREによるコラボコレクション“THE YEAR OF THE OX”がリリースされる。THEY ARE（ゼイアー）はファッションシーンの注目を集める中国人デザイナーSu Wukou（スー・ウーコウ）が手掛ける新ブランド。今回のコレクションではVansのクラシックシルエットのフットウェア、スウェット、ジャケットでオックス（丑）の強気な精神を表現している。
本コレクションより、スニーカーをピックアップ。2020年大いに活躍した渋谷発の多国籍音楽集団、ALIのフロントマン、LEOにセルフスタイリングで3型のスニーカーを履きこなしてもらう。

パンクスやスケーターのイメージが強い大定番として
The image of the skater and punk rock scene.
ー今日はヴァンズをセルフスタイリングで履いていただきました。今作はVANS×THEY AREのコラボ作で“THE YEAR OF THE OX”という干支にちなんだコレクションなんですが、着用してみていかがでしたか?
LEO：ポップな配色ですよね。特にピンクのワントーンでまとめられたオールドスクールは可愛くて良いと思いました。男女問わず合わせられますよね。個人的な趣味で言うと、僕はエラも好きでずっと履いてきたんですよ。今もグレー&ブラックの2トーンの1足を愛用していますよ。
ーToday we have asked for Leo to wear Vans as his self-styling. This piece is a collaboration of the project, VANS×THEY ARE, and the theme is called, “THE YEAR OF THE OX”, named after the zodiac. What’s your feedback on this collection after trying it on?
LEO：The color scheme is quiet pop. I especially like the pink one tone which gives it a nice old school touch. It could be worn by both genders. My personal favorite is the Era and I have always been wearing them. I have a black and grey 2 tone version myself.
ーヴァンズに対してはどんなイメージはありますか?
LEO：多くの人にとってもそうでしょうけど、やはり定番ですね。10代の頃は渋谷でスケートをずっとやっていたこともありましたし、昔はRANCIDなどのパンクスのスタイルも好きだったんです。そのファッションと言えば、黒スキニーにヴァンズを合わせて革ジャンを着るという印象が強くて。リーズナブルでキッズでも手にすることができるのも好印象ですね。特にエラはどんなコーディネートにも合わせやすい。そんなイメージがあります。
ーWhat kind of image do you have with Vans?
LEO：I have the same standard image of the brand as most people. During my teens I use to skate a lot in Shibuya, and back in the day I liked the punk style like RANCID. That style entailed black skinny jeans with Vans and leather jacket. The cost was reasonable for kids to get their hands on them so therefore it had a good impression. Era was specifically what I preferred because it was very easy to coordinate yourself in.
ー本日はセルフスタイリングでお願いしたわけですが、LEOさんならではのスタイルでもあるジャケットのセットアップにTシャツを合わせてくれましたね。この理由や、どんなTシャツを合わせたのかも教えてくれますか?
LEO：普段はシャツなんですが、今日はヴァンズと相性の良いTシャツをインナーに合わせました。ちょっとスケーター寄りの着こなしに近づけたかったんですよ。ジャケットの色味もスニーカーが映えるものを合わせたつもりです。合わせたTシャツは映画『テキサス・チェーンソー』、『シャイニング』のもの。1着はプレーンですけどね。ホラー映画のTシャツを選んだ理由は、ALIが今取り組んでいる音楽のテーマとして、当時のホラー映画をテーマにしているからです。
ーYou’ve done self-styling for today with your trade mark style of the jacket and a T-shirt set up. What was the reasoning behind it and what kind of T-shirt have you chosen?
LEO：Usually I wear a collared shirt but since I’m wearing Vans today I’ve chosen a T-shirt that goes well together with the brand. A bit of a skater vibe is what I aimed for. I believe the color of the jacket I chose brings out the color of the sneaker as well. The T-shirt I chose are the two horror films, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Shinning”. One of them is a plain one though. The reason why I chose a horror film T-shirt is because it is currently the music theme of ALI.
今後はホラー映画が持つカルチャー感を音楽に
The connection between the horror movie culture and music.
ーホラー映画をテーマに制作されているというのは具体的にどういうことですか?
LEO：ALIの音楽表現は映画からインスピレーションを受けることも多いんです。これから取り組もうと思っている音楽のバックボーンにホラー映画をセレクトしていて、それでTシャツやポスターを集めているんです。音楽を作るときに、そのテーマに則って、自分が好きな写真やアートワークを収集して壁にバーっと並べて、どういう世界を自分が描くかを考えるんです。これはワコマリアで森さん（ワコマリアデザイナーの森 敦彦氏。LEOはワコマリアのスタッフでもある）がやっていたことで、自分もそれに倣って実践していることです。
ーCan you elaborate more on how your current music theme are horror movies?
LEO：The music composition of ALI actually is quiet often inspired by movies. For upcoming music that we create, I am intending on selecting few horror films as the back bone. For this reason, I am recently collecting more horror film T-shirts and posters. When making music, I pick one theme, collect pictures and art work that I like that goes along with the theme, spread them out on a wall, and imagine the type of piece I want to write. I’ve learned this method from Mori-san of Wacko Maria (Leo is staff of the clothe designer Atsuhiko Mori, the founder of Wacko Maria). I have a lot of respect towards him and I believe it’s a great method for creating art.
ーまだ公開されていない新曲ですが、TVアニメ「 すばらしきこのせかい The Animation 」のオープニングテーマをALIが担当しているじゃないですか。これまでのALIの中でも相当アップテンポな楽曲だと感じました。
LEO：「TEENAGE CITY RIOT」という曲で、2021年春にリリース予定ですが、この曲がまさにホラー映画のイメージなんですよ。
ーIt still is not released yet but there’s going to be a new song which is going to be the opening theme song for the anime, “The World Ends with You”. The song is quiet up tempo even more so than the other originals.
LEO：The name of the song is called, “TEENAGE CITY RIOT”, and we are planning to release it on the spring of 2021. This song had a strong inspiration from horror films.
ーまだ一部分しか公開されていないですが、かなりロック色が強い印象があって。
LEO：そうですね。2年ぐらいワコマリアでロカビリーやガレージを研究してきたんですが、その対象にDJ ハーヴィー（DJ Harvey）とケブ・ダージ（Keb Darge）という2人のレジェンドDJがいるんですよ。DJ ハーヴィーの要素は「LOST IN PARADISE feat.AKLO」に自分の解釈を昇華することができたんですけど、「TEENAGE CITY RIOT」に関してはケブ・ダージから得たものを込めようと思ったんです。2020年まではタランティーノ映画だとか、そこから派生するカルチャーを描きたいと思ってやってきたんですけど、来年は、より一層踏み込んでホラー映画の要素も飲み込みつつ、音像の面では、こういう方向性の曲も増えていくと思います。
ーOnly short portion of the song is out in public, but there was a very strong rock essence to the music.
LEO：Yes, there is. I’ve been studying rockabilly and garage rock for 2 years at Wacko Maria, and there are these two legend DJs called DJ Harvey and KebDarge. From DJ Harvey I was able to get inspired and portray his essence into our song, “Lost In Paradise feat. AKLO”. In terms with KebDarge, he has inspired me to write “TEENAGE CITY RIOT”.
During 2020, I had more of an Tarantino film image and wanted to portray that culture into the music but for next year, I want to step in a little further into horror films and create more music that goes a long with that essence.
ー一方で、1月27日には2020年までの集大成とも言える1stミニアルバム「LOVE, MUSIC AND DANCE」が発表されます。この作品の概要について教えてください。
LEO：ファンクってものを東京から明確に発信しておかなくちゃなという使命感があったし、僕らもファンクバンドと名乗ってやってきたわけなので、しっかりとファンクのアルバムを作りたかったんです。それが形になったのが「LOVE, MUSIC AND DANCE」です。
ーOn the other hand the on January 27th, 2021 there is going to be a release of the first mini album “Love, Music, and Dance” which reflects their music during 2020. Can you please share your thoughts regarding this album?
LEO：I believe it was our duty as a band what the genre funk meant to us in Tokyo, especially because we started out claiming as a funk band. Therefore, it was quite important to get that right in this first album. That’s how our first album “LOVE, MUSIC, AND DANCE” was formed.
ーでは、今作はファンク色が強めで?
LEO：強いですね。シュガーヒル・ギャング（Sugar Hill Gang）的な。僕なりにディスコとHIPHOPとグルーヴが落とし込まれた楽曲に、強いメッセージが乗っかっている音楽をやりたいと考えてきて、それを表現できたのが良かったと思っています。
―Does that mean there’s a strong funk essence in this album?
LEO：Yes, it sure is. It has some similarities to the Sugar Hill Gang where there’s a fusion of Disco and Hip Hop, dropping both vibes into the groove with a strong message in each one of them. I am glad that we were able to express ourselves in this album.
ーSHING02、梅田サイファー、J-REXXX、RUEEDなどなど……。「LOVE, MUSIC AND DANCE」は客演陣も実に豪華ですね。
LEO：はい。ここも今作において注目してほしい点ですね。参加してくれたアーティストとのやりとりを細かく話すとキリがなくなってしまうぐらいなので、それはまた別の機会で。とにかく素晴らしいセッションを経て完成させることできました。今作のリリースパーティ『LOVE, MUSIC AND DANCE 2021』を2月2日にビルボードライブ大阪で。2月5日に渋谷クアトロで開催します。以降の活動は、世間がこういう状況なので様子を見ながらですが、2021年も引き続きALIの動向に注目しておいてほしいですね。夢でもあるスヌープ（スヌープ・ドッグ、Snoop Dogg）とのコラボも実現させたいと思っていますから。
―SHING02, Umeda Cypher, J_REXX, RUEED, and more… You have such a glamorous line up for the featuring artist.
LEO：Yes, I agree. This is the aspect we want the listeners to pay attention to. There was a lot of work involved to be able to collaborate with all of these artists who worked together with us. It would take up a lot of time to get into details so perhaps I can talk about it some other time. Besides, it was all worth the effort because we were able to create an excellent piece of art.
The release party for this album “LOVE, MUSIC, AND DANCE 2021” will be held on February 2nd at Billboard Osaka and February 5th at Shibuya Quattro.
We still need to keep in mind with the current pandemic situation of the world but we are planning to march on forward for 2021. I have a dream of collaborating with Snoop Dogg one of these days as well.
